Understanding the Notes directory structure

In the beginning there was C:\Notes and C:\Notes\Data and a notes.ini somewhere in the path pointing to the data directory. And live was good. Over time things became more complex powerfull, the notes.ini moved to the data directory (fun when upgrading) to accomodate multi-user installs. Notes 8 arrived and Notes turned into an Eclipse RCP application uniting the classic C core with a flexible UI based on IBM's Expeditor Framework. Now there is a lot more to Notes (my program directory totalling 23768 entries using 958 MB - that's client including Symphony and Sametime on Ubuntu 9.10). While you still can wipe the program directory and reinstall everything, you want to maintain all data that are relevant.
