TV cutback

I'm not a TV fan despite working there before. I sometimes spend mindless hours trying to relax. So I try to limit access (... and lead us not into temptation style..). However we ~~have~~ had Cable TV. Hallmark, Disney, Discovery, National Geographics, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and others came in the family package. Until Sunday. Then Ida had the sudden insight, that the kids spent too much time in front of the TV and that Ernest's eyesight seems worsening. So since Monday, gone is the decoder, we are a cable pay-TV free household. Some basic channels remain, so its not close to last time, but a good start.

Guess it depends on how much _value_ you think you are getting out of it. Has it been _enriching_ ? I typically do not watch TV anymore; the Internet being a much more fabulous source of information and news has changed all that.

Where cable TV comes in useful is something the Internet has yet to accommodate (comfortably and cheaply) - live video coverage of sporting events continue to be reigned by satellite, not TCP/IP.

Otherwise, the programmes of Discovery and National Geographic always provides interesting topics I would otherwise not have bothered to look up myself.

I cut off TV a few years back, when I was working form home and writing books all day - it was too easy to get lost in that hopeless little screen....Now I'm back, but try to stick to HBO series and movies. A digital video recorder helps too, you can choose what and when to watch.
